TMC MP Jawhar Sircar resigns from politics, citing corruption and RG Kar case

Kolkata, September 8, 2024 :  Jawhar Sircar, a member of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and Rajya Sabha MP, has announced his resignation from both his parliamentary position and politics altogether. His decision comes in protest against the West Bengal government’s handling of the RG Kar rape and murder case and the prevailing culture of corruption within the party. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar, a former IAS officer, expressed deep concern over the rampant corruption in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stating that it affects not only him but also the people of West Bengal. He specifically referenced the tragic August 9 incident involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, indicating that he had “endured patiently” for a month after the incident, anticipating Banerjee’s direct involvement with the protesting junior doctors.

Sircar criticized the government’s delayed punitive measures in response to the incident, suggesting that quicker action could have restored normalcy in the state. He wrote, “Whatever punitive steps that government is taking now are too little and quite late.“I believe that normalcy could have been achieved in this state much sooner if the group of corrupt doctors had been dismantled and those responsible for improper administrative actions had been held accountable.” In his resignation letter, Sircar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha for three years. However, he voiced his growing disillusionment with the TMC’s response to corruption and strong-arm tactics employed by some party leaders. He shared his personal experiences, noting that he had been denied a government plot due to his critical stance on corruption, contrasting his modest lifestyle with the lavish lifestyles of some elected leaders. While acknowledging that corruption exists in other parties and states, Sircar emphasized that the people of West Bengal could no longer tolerate what he termed “extravagant corruption.” He expressed concern over the public’s growing anger and disillusionment with the government, highlighting a strong desire for justice following the RG Kar incident. He remarked, “The current surge of public outrage is directed against the unchecked arrogance of a select few and the corrupt.” Sircar stressed that the ongoing protests are non-political and driven by a genuine demand for justice, urging the government to act swiftly to correct its course before communal forces exploit the situation. With a firm commitment to combat corruption and authoritarianism, Sircar stated his intention to formally resign from his position in the Rajya Sabha and completely dissociate from politics. He concluded his letter by expressing his best wishes for the future of West Bengal, urging Banerjee to take decisive action to address the issues plaguing the state.
