Unopposed Election Trend Persists in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar, March 30, 2024– The tradition of securing unopposed election victories in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly persists, with the influence of monetary incentives shaping the electoral landscape, eliciting varied responses from the public on the essence of democratic elections.

The trend of uncontested victories in Arunachal Pradesh began in 1999 when four leaders clinched seats without opposition. Since then, this practice has continued, notably with three BJP MLAs winning unopposed in the 2019 elections and 11 Congress candidates, including the current Chief Minister Pema Khandu, in 2014. However, several of these MLAs later defected to the BJP, forming the state government.

Expressing concern over the lack of a robust opposition, an unnamed intellectual emphasized the importance of a healthy democratic system, suggesting state-funded elections as a potential solution to mitigate the influence of money in politics.

Retired Assistant Director of Research Dept. and sociologist RN Koley emphasized the significance of adult franchise and the voters’ right to express their opinions. He criticized unopposed victories, highlighting the deprivation of democratic rights for voters in these constituencies.

Former MD of Arunachal Pradesh Industrial Development and Financial Corporation Ltd. (APIDFC) Dr. Tony Koyu underscored the drawbacks of unopposed elections, citing reduced mass participation and heightened potential for corruption and authoritarian tendencies within the ruling party.

Dr. Koyu further warned against the emergence of an opposition-free India, stressing the critical role of opposition parties in upholding democratic principles.

Retired Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations Department, Denhang Bosai, pointed out both the advantages and disadvantages of uncontested elections. While it may prevent wastage of resources and curb electoral violence, it also risks stifling democratic processes and accountability.

Amidst these discussions, senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein lauded the trust and confidence in the leadership and developmental initiatives under Chief Minister Khandu’s governance, heralding a promising future for Arunachal Pradesh.

As the trend of unopposed elections persists, stakeholders continue to debate the implications for democracy and governance in Arunachal Pradesh.
