New Delhi, March 12, 2024: The Union Health Ministry, led by Shri Apurva Chandra, Union Health Secretary, has launched a National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (NAP-SE) in India. Aimed at reducing snakebite deaths by half by 2030, the plan adopts a ‘One Health’ approach, spanning human, wildlife, tribal, and animal health sectors.
The initiative includes the release of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, featuring a booklet, “Snakebite – Let’s put an end to snakebite deaths,” posters outlining ‘Dos’ and ‘Don’ts,’ and a 7-minute Snakebite Awareness video. A Snakebite Helpline (15400) will be piloted in five states, offering immediate assistance. Additionally, a National Rabies Control Programme Website has been launched, providing resources on rabies, while the National One Health Programme for Zoonoses strengthens disease surveillance. This comprehensive strategy seeks to systematically reduce snakebite risk and enhance public awareness, marking a significant step in public health and safety.
