New Delhi, March 16,2024: The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the dates for the seven-phase Lok Sabha election, marking the onset of a significant electoral battle. Alongside, the poll body also announced the election dates for legislative assemblies in four states – Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Notably, bye-elections to 26 assembly constituencies will coincide with the Lok Sabha elections. Vote counting for all these elections is scheduled for June 4, 2024.
The first phase of the Lok Sabha election is slated for April 19, 2024, while the final phase will be conducted on June 1, 2024. With the announcement of the poll dates, the model code of conduct has been enforced, signaling the commencement of stringent guidelines for electoral conduct.
The term of the 17th Lok Sabha is set to conclude on June 16, 2024, coinciding with the expiration of the legislative assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar disclosed that there are 96.8 crore electorates in the country, comprising 49.7 crore males and 47.1 crore females. Responding to media inquiries, Kumar reassured the public regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), asserting their complete safety.
According to the election schedule, the Andhra Pradesh assembly election will be held on May 13, 2024. In Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, assembly elections are slated for April 19, 2024. Meanwhile, Odisha’s legislative assembly election will be conducted across four phases on May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, 2024.
