Death Toll reaches 30 in Central Japan Earthquakes

Tokyo, January 2 ,2023- The death toll has climbed to 30 following a series of powerful earthquakes that struck central Japan and the surrounding areas, according to local authorities as reported by national news sources. The most severely affected region, Ishikawa prefecture, witnessed numerous building collapses and fires, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 30 lives.

Reports of additional damage and information regarding people trapped in other municipalities continue to emerge. Injuries have been reported in Niigata, Toyama, Fukui, and Gifu prefectures due to collapsed or damaged buildings.

Describing the rescue efforts as a race against time, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that the government has deployed self-defense force troops to the affected areas and remains committed to providing ongoing assistance.

The earthquakes, including major ones with a preliminary magnitude of up to 7.6, occurred on Monday at a shallow depth on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency has officially designated this seismic event as the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
